Ipoh's very own indie heroes were in town during their show at Search Fenomena in Johor Bahru on the next day. We managed to ask them about their updates and other newsflash from Ipoh as well.

JOHO would like to thank statiksound for organising this and to EMBRACE HALL for the venue, many said that it has been a long time since we last got this kind of atmosphere and yeah we agreed.

A big applause to those who also performed with them that night. We got names like Pelanggaran AKta Bunyi, Second Radio, Redemption and also Statik performing live and full of passion.

Heritage Race 2011

In conjunction with Iskandar Malaysia is organizing Heritage Race 2011 on Saturday, 9th July 2011. The race is open for everyone. This is a good opportunity to test your knowledge on the heritage of Johor Bahru and at the same time stand a chance to win cold hard cash and other prizes.

The 8th JB Arts Festival

For 24 days starting on 1 of July to 24 of July 2011, Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim that is located at Bukit Timbalan, Johor Bahru is going to be the home of 8th JB Arts Festival. You guys are cordially invited to the festival. Lets live the arts!


Their theme for 2011 is to go green which mean no cars are allowed inside the Bukit Timbalan but fret not, there are plenty of car parks surrounding the majestic building. This is the time to bring your family and friends to enjoy the exciting arts, sounds, light and movements the festival has to offer.

This year’s festival promises to be the most exciting yet. Highlights include a debut by re: mix sponsored by the Singapore Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts. Join us in Empathy – a special program in remembrance of the Japan tsunami victims. There's also GEGO 2011 that will take place on 8th July 2011, an event for the youth made by the youth.

This year’s festival is as eclectic as anything! From classical to Indie to jazz. From dance to theatre to film. From Photo exhibitions to flea markets to skateboard racing. From choral singing to heritage race. From Michael Jackson moonwalk to 80’s retro music. From Chinese traditional orchestras to kompang in harmony. From zapin to bhangra…..and it goes on.

Spray & Paint and Fixie Gathering

In conjunction with Spray & Paint and Fixie Gathering on 25th June 2011, JOHO once again calling out to you guys for another gathering. The main event are the graffiti demo by the Super Sunday, gathering of fixed bike riders and the soft launch of Grip Reaper. There are also Book Donation Campaign that is organized by Perpustakaan Sultan Ismail in conjunction with the "Jom ke Perpustakaan" that will take place on 26 June 2011 at the library.

And of course, we are bringing you the Car Boot Sale as well. Car Boot Sale is an event that JOHO organized for the people of Johor in general and the community of JOHO in particular. It usually takes place every first Saturday of the month. Like the name suggested, the sales are done with cars lining up and use their car boot to display the merchandises they want to sell from DIY products to their own clothing line brands.

Sepanjang minggu ni JOHO dah cucuk korang semua dengan muzik keroncong. Kita dah tahu serba sedikit mengenai muzik ni, terima kasih pada korang yang tak segan dan sama-sama kongsi pendapat. Jadi sekarang dah tiba masanya kita sama-sama meriahkan Pesta Keroncong Johor 2011 dan layan muzik ni secara live kat Stadium Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru pukul 8 malam pada 29 Mei 2011.

Minggu ni JOHO khaskan sebagai minggu mengenali muzik keroncong. Kami harap korang pun boleh participate dan sama-sama kita kenal asal usul muzik yang telah lama bertapak di bumi melayu ni. Malah muzik ini juga digemari dan didengari oleh bangsa lain.


Misi kita minggu ini ialah untuk spreadkan muzik keroncong ni kepada semua anak-anak muda dan pelapis bangsa Johor. JOHO telah create satu tempat berdiskusi di facebook (klik sini) bagi memudahkan kita bertukar pendapat dan berbincang secara sihat mengenai muzik yang tak mati ditelan zaman ini.

Soul.

A simple word yet has a definition as vast as the entire ocean, so deep even the word ‘bottomless’ is an understatement and so pure the fresh morning light is the equal.

JOHO had the chance to attend a small conference held by Iskandar Malaysia on April 18 2011. The conference entitled “Bicarawara: Alam Bina Warisan Kita” put forward the plans and strategies that will be realized by the government and other related agencies in building back the glory of JB’s heritage buildings and architecture. The guest speakers were people of influence, experience and knowledge. We were very lucky to be able to listen to the wisdom passed on by these wonderful people:

The mini conference was an eye opener because it deepens our LOVE to this proud country where heritage is something so priceless, it created us, Johoreans with identity.

So people ask, how do you build or preserve the soul of Johor in its buildings and architecture? If there exist such term as “Johorization”, that would be an accurate answer. Iskandar Malaysia is planning to include Johor elements in its developments in order to “johorize” and emphasize the sense of identity in the buildings and architecture. A massive agenda by Iskandar Malaysia called “Pelan Induk Ciri-ciri Tempatan” has been planned and soon will be executed for the development of Johor Bahru city.

So what this massive government plan has got to offer us, the youths of Johor? What benefits will this plan offer us? JOHO is proud to be the youth’s representative during that day but we are more delighted that we are able to share the information with you guys, young bloods who crave for something fresh and relevant in JB scene.

From the conference, here are some of the future plans that are waiting for us.

The re-opening of Sungai Segget.
Prepare to go back down the memory lane. Major conservation of Sungai Segget will take place to re-open the historical river and re-create a new, clean atmosphere of Sungai Segget.

Kota Budaya Johor Bahru: Rimba Warisan Tanjug Puteri
Located at the old Custom site. An educational, recreational and leisure park that homes 5 themed parks; Taman Akal Budi,Taman Istiadat, Taman Cerita, Taman Herba and Taman Makanan & Ulaman.

Construction of Tapak Warisan Johor along Sungai Johor.

Major conservation to refine and preserve heritage buildings in Jalan Pahang, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Jalan Trus and Jalan Dhoby.
Some impressive preservation and refinement of old buildings have already taken place, i.e unique eating places like Roost Juice Bar, Eats and Beats and not forgetting the place for youths in JB nowadays can shop for fashion such as TGND and the Scandalist.

JB as a city of arts, heritage and culture and Iskandar Malaysia as beautiful waterfront city.

Johor used to be a country full of souls. Johor is a prosperous country that houses talented icons, arts, cultures and heritage. The uniqueness of Johor is unlimited. Johoreans are blessed with rare, scrumptious foods like soto, nasi ambeng, mee rebus, tempe, sambal goreng, and the list goes on. We have the most beautiful traditional dances and music like Zapin, Kuda Kepang, Ghazal and Gamelan. Our youths are somewhat special from youths from other countries. Besides the 2-session schooling system, 10 years back most of the youths know how to Zapin and how to Joget. A significant number of lucky youths might even seen actual Kuda Kepang at a very young age. And it is relevant to say that because of these uniqueness of Johor, it is a home full of people with strong classical souls. So what if people are using iPads now instead of bulky computers, BB instead of Nokia 3310, listening to indie pop instead of Keroncong? A true Johorean never lost his/her vintage taste and classic soul.

Now the time has come, after a long quiet years, Johor is on its way back to shine its glory. At last the EVOLUTION AND REVOLUTION of Johor, or specifically JB, are going to take place real soon. JOHO is giving our full support to all of the relevant changes and we hope that the precious youths of JB will also do their part. JB youths have so much to offer and this is the time to prove them that we also can be a positive agent of change. With love, trust and respect, let’s outlive the spirit of being the Johorean souls.

In short JOHO seriously want youths to start to take issues related to Arts, Heritage and Culture seriously so that the new generation of Johor Darul Takzim will never lost their 'SOUL' and relive the pride and respect to our beautiful state regardless of any districts around Johor.

Bicarawara

This is the second year Iskandar Malaysia organizing Bicarawara, a platform for speakers to voice their opinions for the development of Johor as a State. Just like last year, Bicarawara 2011 took place at the majestic Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim at Bukit Timbalan on 18th April 2011 and JOHO was honored to be invited for such important event.

Larian Hijau Bandaraya 2011

In conjunction with Earth Day, MBJB is organizing LARIAN HIJAU BANDARAYA JOHOR BAHRU 2011 on Sunday 24th April 2011 at Bukit Timbalan.

The tag line for the run is RUN + RECYCLE = GREEN. On top of promoting healthy lifestyle, this event is targeting to educate the public on recycle as well, in order to keep the event venue clean.

The route will cover only 3km, starts and ends at Bukit Timbalan. First 100 participants will receive the limited edition Larian Hijau T-Shirt. So fill up the form and register early during the day or submit it to MBJB before the day.

To participate, you need to bring a min of 0.5kg recyclable item (e-waste is also acceptable) as the entrance fees. There are prizes and lucky draw to be won. The more you bring the recyclable items, the higher chances for you to win the lucky draw.

As a responsible Johorean, we urge you to participate for the best of your health as well as to show our true support towards GREEN.

Ride for Charity: A Moment to Remember

On the 26th of March 2011,JOHO and Southernfixed collaborated with the help of Iskandar Malaysia and supported by Starbucks,CrossOver and GripReaper in a memorable event that had everyone elevated to another place. A place where only those who participate knew. On that day everyone witnessed the beauty of Unity,Trust and Love.

We hope that this event will be an eye opener to all youth around Johor and Malaysia to start involving in charity works and to remember those who really need us most. We were blessed with great weather and supports from PBSM and two very nice Policemen who stayed until everyone reached from point A to Rumah Barkat Johor (orphanage home) and back to where we started.

Thanks to those who participated and thanks to those who came all the way from within and outside of Johor to be with us on that day,no words can describe how thankful we are to you.We hope that the next 'Ride for Charity' will be bigger and will travel all over Johor or maybe even Malaysia.

Car Boot Sale for Earth Hour 2011

As you guys know, we are supporting Earth Hour Johor 2011 that will take place this Saturday, March 26, 2011. With this, there is an opportunity for you to be part of this event as a boot seller. We have limited space however (only 14) so if you are interested please let us know as soon as possible.

Earth Hour: What to Expect

During Johor Earth Hour 2011, JOHO will open a merchandise stand on that day that sells official merchandises for the event which include T-shirt, buttons and JOHO very own DIY tanglung. These merchandises will only be available at Johor Earth Hour 2011 that will take place at Bukit Timbalan on 26 March 2011.


Johor Earth Hour 2011 is organized by Unit Perancang Ekonomi Johor (UPEN). JOHO is part of the creative team for this event and we want you guys to be part of it because this is the right step you have to make for the sake of our next generation.

There will be Junk Sale during the day as well as JOHO Ride for Charity event organized in conjunction with Earth Hour. You will be entertained by Aizat and Johor's very own talented youngsters during the night. They are Fynn Jamal, Statik and Pepatung.

Ride for Charity: The Routes and Supporters

We would like to extend our invitation to all JOHO lovers out there to Earth Hour Johor Bahru 2011 which will take place at Bukit Timbalan, Johor Bahru from 10am to 11pm on 26 March 2011. We are sure you guys know what to do during that one precious hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Switch off all the lights and unplugged all the unused plugs in your house before you come to celebrate the Earth Hour with us. You are doing mother earth a favor.

Photo Battle: January

Salam sejahtera everyone. Throughout this year, JOHO will organize a photo battle contest monthly starting in January. That's this month guys in case some of you still think this is 2010 :P

The photo battle is open to all JOHO lovers. It doesn't matter how old are you or where you come from, but if you are part of the JOHO portal, then this contest is for you to participate.

Terms & Conditions:

• You must be one of the JOHO lovers. If you are not, just sign up here and you are good to go.
• Your concept for January is as follows:
  
  
  
• All submissions will be judged in term of effort like props, talents, etc.

• Best photo of the month will received a mystery gift from us.
