Malam Budaya dan Warisan JB Bazz

MBJB with IRDA under JB Transformation program is organizing an event this coming New Year's eve. The event is called Karnival Budaya dan Warisan JB Bazz. This event is actually a start to JB Transformation One Month One Event initiative for 2011.

Featuring cultural music and dance shows at 5 spots in JB City, this event is a platform to promote JB towards an Arts and Culture City (please see below for programs).

Do come join in the fun and supporting the effort of transforming JB into a better city.

Below are the video of Wight Set! setting off their journey from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru riding their fixie (credits to Duurath)



Wight Set! consists of Firdauz Haron and Wan Omar, tough guys riding fixed. They rode the PLUS highway with a total of more than 300km from the capital, Kuala Lumpur to their hometown, Johor Bahru, the southernmost city of the Eurasian mainland.

The journey started at 3pm on 15th November and ended on 2:30am on 17th November.

My first ever entry in this awesome portal. And what better way for me to have a humble start than writing about me being a proud Johorian.

For me Johor, or specifically JB is a place so personal, so close to my heart that it is MORE than the place I'm staying, more than just a hometown. Eventhough my 'uri' was buried somewhere in Sabah, JB is the place where everything happened. Be it either significant or insignificant, JB is the place where every single molecule of my being and soul was built, created, invented, developed and even distorted. I grew up with tempe, epok-epok, KFC Holiday Plaza, pecal, gebor, air jarang and any Johor authentic word, you name it! Hehe.

I remember during my childhood years, Holiday Plaza was for Hari Raya and its kids electric car outside the complex, Kerry's for the McDonalds, The Store Sentosa for monthly shopping, Komtar was for Kebayan and Segget was for JB very own 'Hard Rock'.

When I was a jumpy teenager after puberty *ahem*, meaning my lower secondary years, the most prominent place would be... yeaa.. CITY SQUARE. Right now I don't even know how I wasted my time back then lepaking in CS the whole afternoon after school. Hah, semua baik mengaku siapa yang habis sekolah terus pegi CS with your uniform?? Haa.. jangan tak ngaku eh. Watching movies when we had the money, lepaking in Kebayan Komtar eating the scrumptious roti john (ingat tak roti john komtar?? ingat pls2!), cuci mata loitering just outside CS and using Mom and Dad's money to treat ourselves with Roibo, Vivo, Pizza Hut Komtar, McD, Roti Boy and Takoyaki. And then we walked to Kotaraya, tapi kena lalu Menara Ansar sebab nak air-cond to go to the game arcade. Looking back, I would sigh of the... I can't find a suitable word in English, but what the teenagers my age back then would say is 'agas'. Haha. I never imagined I'll be calling myself an 'agas'. Cis.

16 marks the age where I started to grow apart from JB. I went studying in Negeri Sembilan then continue for my uni years in Melaka. Staying in Melaka made me become half a betrayer to JB. I got my first (and hopefully last) disastrous heartbreak in JB so I took refuge in Melaka. I love Melaka. At that particular moment I saw Melaka as colourful, joyous, culturally enriched country, compared to JB where it was all gloomy, heartbreaking and silent. I think it was more to a personal reason why I'd rather stayed in Melaka than JB.

But then I found a realistic reason for it. The difference between Melaka and JB was that in Melaka I can easily get access to continue my passion, that is to dance (click here for details on my passion). The art and cultural movements there are so active, they drive at full speed and everybody felt welcomed to join. They have many small organizations and ALL organizations participate actively, they have shows all the time and they provide chances for everybody even the beginners. They send teachers to teach dance lessons for free in all schools. I was amazed by the effort because if you compared Melaka to JB, I believe JB has a lot more authentic cultural treasure. But then, the movement was sadly, silent, very silent.

But lately, I noticed that SOMETHING has shaken Johor, particularly JB, quite hard that some government lazy bums already feel uneasy, some sleepy organizations wake up from their sleep and some enthusiastic peeps walk out of their comfort zone to try something new and fresh.


And yes, for all of the above, thanks to JOHO. JOHO gives new breath to the lifestyle in JB. It's just been a year but the achievement and the transformation of JB is equal to 5 years of almost-immobile cultural development. The members have put their blood and guts and whatnot to make it happens. I admire their passion and persistence to save Johor from becoming CULTURALLY EXTINCT.

Staying in JB after I finished my study is such a bliss. I love JB like I never love before. I even don't miss Melaka that much and yeah, my plans to work in Melaka just vanished because I know, JB is where I belong. Hujan emas di negeri orang, hujan batu di negeri sendiri, lebih baik di negeri sendiri. I may be going away from JB again to further my study and people may say that I'm such a hypocrite by looking at my non-evident contribution to my country. But wherever I go, I love Johor. And JOHO loves Johor. I believe that Johor needs JOHO and the supporters to keep Johor alive. I support the passion JOHO tries to outlive. And for haters out there, speak only when you ACTUALLY HAVE better things to show. If not. Just sit silently in the corner you've been hiding yourselves in.

And JOHO, thanks again. Keep on rocking!

Last month, on a rainy November, JOHO organized the first ever Car Boot Sales. Despite the rain and puddles, the event was a success thanks to all the supporting fellows of JOHO. You guys really rawks.

In this Car Boot Sales volume of Fesyen Gerek, we are bringing some of the fashionistas that went to the event. Needless to say, Johor people really know how to rock our own sense of style.

Got Books? Donate it for Charity

Want to get rid of your used books?

JOHO is looking for good hearted peeps who'd like to repurpose their used books while also helping the needy. Instead of the books collecting dusts, send them to us so we can donate it to Rumah Seri Kenangan and Rumah Barkat Bukit Chagar, both are houses for the orphanages.

This program is ongoing and donations can be made by the public at any time at JOHO concept store. The books donations will be used to expand the house library and provide the orphanages with current reference, research, and literature materials.

But please note that we're unable to accept newspapers or catalogs. Also, please make sure that the books you donate are intended to be donated, as we cannot locate & return donated books after they have been donated.

100 Strangers Portrait Project

Attention to all photographers out there. Have you heard of the project to capture/snap/shoot 100 portraits of strangers that is brought to you by the Pakatan Sulit? Well if you haven't, now you have! :D


You guys are welcome to join in the project that is supported by Kuku Besi. If you are interested, gather in front of the Post Office building in Johor Bahru at 8.30am on 5 December 2010. Needless to say, you have to bring your own weapon/gear.

This is quite a big scale project for the photographers in Johor Bahru especially so don't miss the opportunity to get to know your fellow passionists.

Program Keusahawanan dan Modal Insan Industri Multimedia Kreatif Iskandar Malaysia (WANITA)

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and a collaboration with Institut Keusahawanan Negara (INSKEN) under the Ministry of International Trade Industry are launching 2 programs which are

• Meningkatkan Modal Insan Multimedia Kreatif
• Meningkatkan Usahawan Multimedia Kreatif.
  

MITI has been so generous as to sponsor the whole 3 days (Fully Residential) programs at Pandan City Academy starting from 9 to 11 November 2010. These programs will be launched by MITI and IRDA. All costs for food, accommodation and traveling to Hotel pandan City are fully paid for by INSKEN. Other agency partners such as MDec and Warisan Global are also joining in to ensure the success of these programs.

There are only limited 30 places offered for female bumiputera from Iskandar Malaysia and Johor. They will learn the technicality in Creative Multimedia as well as Entrepreneurship in Creative Multimedia Industry. For those who are committed and can produced exceptional work output, they will be chosen through certain competitions and will be given a GRANT as a starter and an opportunity to showcase their work at DISNEY CHANNEL, CARTOON NETWORK, ASTRO and the likes.

These programs start at 10am on 9 November 2010 at Ballroom, Pandan City Hotel and end at 6pm on 11 November 2010.

Everyday, Firdauz Haron rides 22km back and forth along the most busiest freeway in Johor Bahru and he rides fast.

All footage were shot with Nikon 35mm f/1.8G on a D300s. Edited with Premiere CS4.

Open House JOHO 2010

JOHO would like to thank everyone who came to our Open House yesterday. You guys made Hari Raya even more special to us. Thanks for the potlucks: KFC, Mee Bandung, Soto, Mee Rebus, Lemang, Sate and all the kueh mueh. Special thanks to Mr. Chendol for providing us with that awesome cendol.
