Alfian Mohamed at Siren's nite

entry by Alfian Mohamed

Firstly I wanna thank JOHO and Starbucks for creating such a wonderful event specially for JOHO lovers, photographers and local act supporters who has made this event a success and make the people of Johor keep asking for more.

On March 26, 2010, JOHO has organized an event with the outing+photography exhibition+local bands as the concept. The event was GREAT! The atmosphere was superb and the crowd were totaly AWESOME!!

Because this was my first time going to this kind of event where you can enjoy your coffee with an acoustics shows, all I can simply said was what more shall you asked for from this Xtravaganza event!

I arrived just nice when I saw a lot of people outside the Starbucks, without wasting any time we (my lil' bro and I) went inside to get the JOHO limited editon Siren's Nite buttons and some coffees. After that I met my ex-primary school classmate. I never thought we would meet at the event.

The show officially started at 8pm where Statik kicked off with their unforgettable melancholy lullaby. At that time the event was on a slow acoustic mode where everyone sat down and relaxed while enjoying Statik who took the stage in full swing!

Highlight

8.05pm - Statik started the show with CHERITA KITA and everyone started to sing along with the tune, it was an unforgettable experience, surely.

8.15pm - Statik performed their latest song GELAP and the song as expected is gonna be a hit on Xfm (I'll bet!!!) I like~~~

8.25pm - Statik final song was NIKMAT SEMENTARA and it eventually brought more people to Starbucks including all the pedestrian outside the cafe. They totally ROCK in acoustic mode. Who denied that must be a wacko who doesn't appreciate music at all

8.28pm - they announced the first lucky draw winner and it turn out to be a American/European/Australian (I wasn't sure) man and he wasn't expected it either.

8.30pm - The Bluebirds took the stage, at that time I was looking for my coffee I placed somewhere else. When I was came back for my seat (on the floor) it started to get more interesting and more people were in front. I lose my seat but my lil' bro still holding his ground and watched the Bluebirds at the stage

8.40pm - It was the the last songs by the bluebirds called ROCKSTAR, I was at the back of the crowd and can actually saw a glimpse of Reza Mohamedand his band on the stage

8.50pm - I managed to get back my seat and while waiting for Plague of Happiness to rock out, they announced the second lucky draw winner.

9.00pm - Mr. Zac's turn to the stage and we all applause for him because without him and the JOHO crew, there will be no Siren's Nite. Terima kasih Mr. Zac for the wonderful event!

9.10pm - Plague of Happiness came up to the stage and rocked out with a ska song that turned the acoustic show that nite to a powerful ska nite and everyone was on their feet and sing along to a very peaceful ska song making the nite even more wonderful.

The song was a tribute to their tour in Indonesia to bring peace between Malaysia and Indonesia with lyric "mengapa kita tetap berpecah lagi? buanglah semua perasaan benci, jangan engkau ikut desakan hati". Great song by a great JOHO band. Yeah bring peace not hatred :)

Story of Siren's Nite

entry by Qusyaire Ezwan

JOHO once again organized a very great event on March 26, 2010. Cooperation between Starbucks and JOHO was a success when many JOHO lovers who attended the Siren’s Nite singing praises to JOHO for the awesome event.

Hundreds of JOHO lovers gathered in crowd at Starbucks, The Zone to liven up the Siren's Nite. The event started at 8:15 pm with a performance from Statik, a group from Skudai. Statik perform three songs for the crowd that night.

After the performance of Statik, we had the first lucky draw which was won by Mr. Martin.

Bluebirds continued to enliven the Siren's Nite with their performance. They also performed three songs that night. A very interesting presentation specially for JOHO lovers. After the presentation, we had the lucky draw for the second time and this time it was won by a cute girl.

Siren's Nite became livelier when Wandi as the MC for the night invited Plague Of Happiness to perform. JOHO lovers who attended that night gathered and stood up to enjoy the performances from POH. For the first time in my life, I stood on the chair of Starbuck. Initially, the POH was only to perform three songs, but the fans kept asking POH to continue with their performance. Finally POH presented six songs that night.

Lastly, we had a lucky draw for the third time and was won by a pair of beloved. Siren's Nite ended after that but those who attended did not directly go back home as their stayed, took pictures and also having a chat with fellow friends from JOHO.

There is nothing that can be expressed about the party last night except that it was superb. I hope JOHO will continue to advance in the future.

Congratulations to JOHO!

Recipe for Hate

Last Saturday, on March 20, 2010, a bunch of JOHO people went to Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat to attend Recipe for Hate, a BBQ and gathering night that was organized by Rekod Lusuh. We started our journey at 3pm when it was raining hard in Johor Bahru. Thank goodness the rain stopped half way. The sun was up albeit behind the cloudy sky.

We fueled our tank with Batu Pahat's famous mee racun first before we continued our journey to Ferry Terminal Minyak Beku, one of the best places to capture the setting sun.

The entrance fee for Recipe for Hate was RM15. You'll get a ticket that you can used to redeem the food provided by Rekod Lusuh. The bands started performing at 8.30pm with Arclic Ayla as the opening act followed by Urughai, Carbon 14 and Sally Faerie. John D. Madman took the center stage with his poetic rendezvous after that. He grabbed the crowd's attention with his words and received a hefty applause.

The show continued with Crestfallen and the rest of the bands. Unfortunately the JOHO members could not stay longer and wait for the show to finish because we need to travel back home.

JOHO would like to thank Feroz Omar and Rekod Lusuh for their hospitality and warm welcome. We wish Rekod Lusuh all the best and hopefully one day we could collaborate and bring in the storm to Batu Pahat.

Roost Juice + Bar

JOHO introduced me to Roost Juice + Bar. It has been around for couple of years I guess. I just didn't know of it, or just does not bother to find out, because I was a hikikimori back in the days. It is only recently that I ventured out and has social life again.

This post is about me telling you guys what an awesome place Roost is. It really is one of the best hang out place perhaps not only in Johor, but in Malaysia as well.

It ain't about the menu (although they are pretty yummy), it is about the place itself. The place has soul. It was decorated to reflect the personality of the owner and very... how should I put this... oldskool and rock n' roll? Yeah, those two are definitely the best words to describe the place. The place also has some kind a laid back attitude about it because the choice of musics it plays so you would be able to chill without worries.

Aight enough with the words, on with the photos.

As you can see, the place is kinda full or art and shit like that. Like I said, awesome. They even have a trishaw at one corner but the picture was shit so I discarded it.

They also has another branch called Roost Bistro. That is where we had our SPAM! party during the New Year.

Laila at Terengganu

Last weekend, Laila went to Kuala Terengganu. They were scheduled to perform at Malaya University of Malaysia (UMT).

The journey started at 1.30am on Saturday, March 6, after we fetch the last member of the band: Faidzal at his house. We did not waste any more time thus drove off towards the destination. This whole journey happened after Laila received an invitation from UMT to perform at their event "The Experimental Invasion" that will take place at Dewan Sultan Mizan later that day.

We arrived at Kuantan around 6am and stopped for refreshments. After teh tarik and nescafe tarik, we resumed our journey to Kuala Terengganu. We made another stop at Rantau Abang for breakfast, overlooking the magnificent view of the South China Sea. One really has to get close to nature to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world.

We finally arrived at our destination, the UMT, around 11am. We were greeted by the organizer and Laila was interviewed by their local media journalists. Laila had to wait another hour to do sound check for their performance that night since the band Khottal was up on the stage doing their sound check when we arrived at the scene. Laila took the opportunity to get some rest and caught up with the other bands.

Even though there were some technical difficulties during the sound check, Laila managed to get it done. It was clear from our faces that we were dead tired from the 12 hours journey and can't wait to sleep properly. At 2pm, we went to the bungalow that the organizer has provided us with. The bungalow was located at the edge of Pantai Batu Buruk and we shared the place with another band from Selangor: Sorganina.

After a quick lunch, we all decided to crash and get the necessary rest for the performance that night. Even though it was less than two hours worth of sleep, it managed to revive and re-energized all of us.

We headed back to UMT at 7.45pm. Laila was scheduled to perform after Sorganina at 9pm. Laila did a last minute check on their equipments and before they know it, their turn is up.

They were properly introduced to the crowd by the MC. Laila has quite a fan-base as they cheered for the band. There were also quite a few Johorean in the crowd. This just fueled Laila's spirit to perform the best of their abilities for the sake of their fans.

Laila started the show with their latest song called Seru followed by Frozen, Probasangka and last but not least was Fatal. I can see that they were enjoying themselves on the stage and that made their performance enjoyable for the crowd as well. I can hear the fans admiring the band as they performed their songs and as a fellow JOHOrean, I was very proud of Laila.

I can see the level of professionalism and commitment from each of the band members. Their passions for their music were obvious and despite the struggles and what not, they show that with determination and passions, they can overcome adversity and be at their best when they are performing. They might be funny and seemingly nonchalant but on stage, it is all Laila.

After the show, Laila was surrounded by their fans. They took pictures and got to know each other a little better. Laila appreciates the fans for their supports and I can see that the fans felt appreciated in return.

Then Laila joined the crowd to watched the band Khottal performing and stayed tune for the main event of the night, a performance by Akta Angkasa.

The Experimental Invasion show was over around 11pm. After the show, the bands that performed that night gathered for a group photo before we all went for dinner at Tenang Seafood 2 Restaurant at Pantai Batu Buruk.

The night ended as the bands said goodbye to each other. Laila said thanks with humblest gratitude to the organizer because they are indeed the best. We then headed back to our bungalow and pretty much called it a night since we will be going home in the morning.

The journey home was full of laughter. I did not feel tired at all from driving all the way from Kuala Terengganu to Johor Bahru because I was having so much fun. Thanks Laila for making me feel welcome. The trip is definitely one of my best experience yet.

Laila's next performance will be at the Istana Budaya on March 27, 2010. Go to their myspace for further information.

Sinema Karung Guni 1

KL-Asia-Eropah-JB

SinemaKarungGuni sesi 1: 20 Februari 2010

  • Toqreemaow JayBee: Tahniah Penganjur Sinema Karung Guni. Tahniah Embrace Hall!

    1) Tiada cara salah membikin filem.
    2) Tiada cara salah menonton filem.

    Terimakasih penganjur.

  • Kluxorious Kluxces: kenapa balik awal? Bread and Flower layan habis.

  • Toqreemaow JayBee: Klux,
Bukan balik. :-(

Nak dengar review Klux tentang film-film Sinema Karung Guni. Kongsi la.

  • Kluxorious Kluxces: saya rasa badan Michel sangat sasa! hahahaha ok ok lets be serious XD

Untuk Breathless, rasanya the crime and the romance were well balance. Given a choice between grief and nothing, I'd choose grief. Dalam tu. And in the end memang Michel chose Nothing pun.

Tok tanya pasal music dia kan? Rasa memang it's something yang trendy pada masa tu but at the same time there's reference to Mozard, Brahm and Chopin. So memang klasikal jugak la.

As for Bread and Flowers, it shows how the two generations have their own way of handling the situation. Orang dulu chose violence while the youths were striving towards peacefulness. They may talked about saving the mankind but they have different approaches. I think that was pretty deep in and of itself. Just think of the difference it can make if the young Palestanian/Iraqi have the same mentality?

  • Toqreemaow JayBee: Re: Breathless
My favret scene adalah scene ending. Simply love that scene.

So true.

  • Kluxorious Kluxces: hehe dari sasa jadi nyah. lari memang tak bleh blah but yeah because of that it was memorable.

    cinta itu sendiri complicated =)

  • Nabilla Riza: tahniah azharr.. memang best laa karungguni cinema!

  • Azrafe Zaky: yeah....ILMU tu yg kita sama2 mau kan...kudos ntuk semua kerana effort yg diberikan...kita sama2 tunggu fasa kedua nanti. yea!
